Universal Accessibility pictogram – Use rights ?

Reply with quote Hello everyone,

I am working in a webdesign company and we were looking for a pictogram that would represent accessibility in general.
Indeed we need a pictogram for a mobile navigation section talking about the accessibility policies of the company.

I found online the “universal accessibility icon” (human on a circle) as seen on the A11Y project website (http://a11yproject.com/).

I went through a lot of research online but I couldn’t find if this pictogram is free of rights.

Does someone have an idea about the rights of usage of this icon ? This is actually I assume an icon originally created by Apple.

Thank you in advance for your answer.

Best,
Virginie
Reply with quote If you follow the link on their site to their GitHub page, they appear to have placed the logo in the public domain. You could contact the Accessibility Project themselves and ask. If you get an answer, do let us know here.

And having said that, I think it would be an excellent icon to use to represent web Accessibility. It would be hard to come up with something that represents all types of disability accessibility, but the spread arms of the Project’s icon suggests, to me, the idea of openly welcoming everyone, which is what accessibility is all about. If we all use it it could soon become universal for web accessibility (as opposed to other kinds of physical accessibility). (NB: There is an “accessibility icon project” in America, but that is exclusively for a sign pointing the way to toilets for for wheelchair users – the icon is a person in a wheelchair, so hardly suitable for web accessibility which is for all kinds of disability.)
