When links can look like anything due to context
Home / Site Building & Testing / When links can look like anything due to context
I’ve held that it’s okay for links inside a navigation bar not to be blue and underlined, because it’s obvious from context that they’re links.
So I’d appreciate some input on my design – http://af.brothercake.com/ There are two levels of navigation, the main nav and the section nav – are both sufficiently obvious that the styling is okay?

yes, as far as navigation goes, i do agree that it’s not always necessary to mark links distinctly as links (if there is no “normal” text there that may confuse matters).
totally unrelated, your implementation of relative navigation (the first, previous, next, last one with link rel) seems to be a bit borked. for instance, going to previous from the homepage produces an error. also, on a more “architectural” level, it may be good to have up and top as well, as your site is two (or more ? have only had a cursory glance around) levels deep.
just thoughts…

That’s a really impressive design. The navigation is obvious from context, and in lists if style sheets are not supported, so I think it works really well.
You have three links, [Skip this section], which point to different locations. It may be worth changing them to where they actually go, for example, [Jump to Navigation]. Also, I would add IDs to the radio buttons, and explicitly associate your labels to the appropriate radio button.
Nice work, I really like it.

Did you get a PHP error like: “Warning: Failed opening ‘content/links.inc'” ? If so, that’s cool – it’s just calling include files that I haven’t made yet. I agree with you about having “up” and “top” links – I was a bit confused about that because it isn’t built in folders, but clearly it forms a heirarchy where the home page is “up” from a subsection, and so on. Thanks for the heads-up

Thanks – high praise indeed from one with such juicy credentials
The skip links – so because they point to different places they should have different text? I can see the sense in that; and likewise with the radio controls.
Thanks both for the input
