Accessible CMS editor

Reply with quote We need some advice on how to make the editing part of our in-house CMS accessible. If we can’t make the editor accessible then there is no
point making the rest of the CMS accessible, as it is the heart of the
application.

At the moment our editor relies totally on JavaScript and apparently
plug-ins aren’t any better for screen readers? I found this one which is being discussed here, although most ofthe discussion seems to be about the output.

Our Head of Technology is looking into using <textarea> but then we
can’t have a link or image browser without losing the focus or where
the user has got to in the page flow. (And users would have to use
some HTML which isn’t ideal.)

We’re also looking at adding AJAX effects that add to the ease of use
for sighted people and we’re very conscious that we need to provide
accessible alternatives – but if we can’t find an accessible editing
solution then there is no point as low or non- sighted users will not
even get to this stage if they can’t use the editor? Without Editing
you’ve got no CMS.

Anyone able to help here?
Reply with quote We’re working on making the editor’s interface more accessible. Here are some details on our progress:

Yes they are. Most plug-ins are written in languages like C++ which have access to the accessibility API built into the operating system which can transmit information to screen readers. With plug-ins it’s possible to achieve the same level of accessibility as with desktop applications.
