My New Website

The plan is to create a unified look without colour changes etc. I'm going to streamline the site - that is, cut out the bits I never bother updating, and enhance the bits I do.
I'm looking for advice and suggestions for the new design.
- does anyone have a 3-column css layout I could 'borrow'? Obviously I'd then want to fiddle on with it myself as it's no good if I don't learn from it...!
- how do you syndicate things with RSS etc? Can anyone point me in the right direction?
- I'm shifting emphasis to more of a weblog style. Any advice on how best to organise/maintain my weblog?
- any other hints/advice?
- anything you do/don't like about the current site that I should keep/make sure I get rid of?

I've used the basic layouts from here http://www.inknoise.com/... for a while now and then built my on stuff on top.

Use one of the blog content management systems - wordpress or textpattern (both .com) will probably do the trick quite nicely for you, and you'll get both things in one.

I would agree with points 4 and 5. Point 2 is wrong, point 1 is wrong. We won a corner at the weekend. It may not be much, but it's a start. Point 3 may be right but I'll give him a chance. And you should be grateful to us... at least unless you give us that money back for Butt...
The only thing you missed was whether or not you are actually from Manchester....
Incidentally, while I'm on, I had a thought about css background images. Basically, assuming they are purely decorative, what accessibility related thingies do I need to concern myself with with them?

Don't allow them to clash with or interfere with the legibility of any of your text.

One thing to bear in mind is whay would happen if you have a images off / css on situation. A lot of sites fall victim of this. Just make sure that the text on the background image isnt the same (or too similar) as to become unreadable when the background image is turned off / unavailable. |
I might be misunderstanding you a little here - but surely if the images are background and decorative, they shouldn't have any information contained within them?
Obviously, you'll have to make sure that there is a background colour set so that if images are off but css is on the text still contrasts well with the background colour, but if your image has any information at all in it, it shouldn't be a background image - it should be a bona fide image with appropriate alt text.

I guess what I was jokingly trying to say is that if you are going more "serious" with the blog / tutorials sort of route then you ought to drop "personal" things like this and the family tree. maybe another URL is appropriate? |
On the one hand, my blog ought to be able to contain anything I'm interested in. On the other hand, too many 'things of interest' do tend to detract from the focus of the site. Family tree stays, definitely. I considered the new URL thing but really don't have time to adequately maintain one site, never mind a second.
I guess I really need to think a fair bit on exactly how I'm going to structure and organise it... ho hum....

Surely the focus of the site is you, because it's your personal site, so given that, put whatever you want up there.
Your gaff, your content, your rules.
