Dealing with WordPress Spam - Help!
I'm relatively new to blogging and I'm using WordPress.
Just lately I'm being inundated with, I guess, automated spam comments directed at one particular post. I've got the option to 'Approve' comments from new contributors before they show enabled. But it's a time consuming and frustrating business and a bandwidth hog.
I know I can ban certain words in the comments, url, etc. But do other, more experienced users, know of a more efficient method?
Thanks.

1. Get the Akismet plugin, if you have not already done so.
2. Get Spam Karma 2. This has a handy blacklist function which can be used to blacklist comments from particlar IP ranges/ specific addresses / linking to particular domains. Not only this, but the blacklists build up automatically when it finds spam.
3. Use Bad Behaviour. This blocks a certain proportion of bots from playing on your site.
I generally get around 30+ spam comments/day, but the only ones that ever make it through this are the pingbacks/trackbacks (usually from scraper splogs) - I need a specific plugin to handle these - but even without that Spam Karma 2 allows me to blacklist these domains if they crop up regularly.
And if you find any other good ones, do tell!

Wow...I'm officially impressed!
Only had Bad Behaviour installed for 15 minutes and it blocked 3 spambots.
I've also installed the other 2 you recommended.
Thanks...I'm officially

Askimet is pretty good on its own, it only makes false positives when combined with other spam plugins (posted today!)
I've been using Akismet eversince I started blogging 3 years ago. So far, it has blocked a lot of spam comments.

I am also using Askimet for my sites. So far so good. But I presume that people having blogs for a long time with a lot of trafic can say if it is enough to use Askimet alone or if it is necessary to use several plugins together.
Nice info.. I've been using Akismet and its really good. I'll also try and observed the other two that was suggested.

Thanks for those plugins. I finally can deal with the amount of spam comments I get now. Do you know if there is a mass comment delete plugin? I ask because I have over 15000 comments and 99.9999% are spam.
