RNIB Web Access Centre no longer exists...
Home / News & Resources / RNIB Web Access Centre no longer exists...
Great to see some discussion about the WAC blog. I work for RNIB's webteam, and I thought I'd respond to a few of the points raised over the last few days.
As I'm sure you can imagine, we're really pleased to have the blog back, even though there were some last minute glitches along the way.
To give you all some background - the new blog was developed as part of RNIB's massive project to revamp our website, intranet and ecommerce site. We've achieved something pretty amazing accessibility-wise with the project, most of which is only visible behind the scenes in the CMS. (Some of you got a sneaky view of the CMS the other day - you lucky people!)
The new website, including the blog, is created with customised, accessible version of Microsoft SharePoint.
For lots of reasons, we decided to bring blog functionality into our CMS rather than carrying on with Wordpress or other providers. It did take longer than we'd hoped to develop, test, tweak, test again and finally sign off the functionality, hence the very long delay getting it back up and running. We're sorry about that, but it couldn't be helped.
I hope you'll all appreciate that it's going to be different from how it was before, but that ultimately the biggest difference - the accessible CMS behind it - is a positive one and a thumbs up for accessibility.
We'll take on board suggestions for improvements, but please remember that we're a charity with limited funds for non-essential changes. Remember too that the blog was developed as part of a much wider project, so we didn't concentrate all our resources into the blog functionality.
If you find serious accessibility or usability issues that prevent you from using the blog, let me know at webeditor@rnib.org.uk.
As for all posts being from Verity Cork... well, that's me. My user account was used to migrate posts over from the old blog. Now that the blog is live again, WAC team members and registered users of the website will be able to add their own posts and comments and 'proper' names will start to appear. Having my lovely name everywhere is (I hope!) a small price to pay for having the information back in place.
'Articles' is one of the categories of the blog (along with Hidden barriers, Too much accessibility and so on). If the post is considered to be an article, that's the category it'll be tagged with. This was inherited from our old blog, where we also had a section called 'Articles' used for longer posts.
So, the error pages/uncalled for login prompts should now be fixed. There are still a couple of things we know about that we're working on, so please do bear with us.
To comment on posts on the new blog, you'll need to register with the new website (that went live back in September). If you were registered with the old website, or with the old blog, I'm afraid those details couldn't be migrated over.
Enjoy the information in the blog - it's top stuff!
(I'll check this forum every so often, but apologies in advance that I won't have time to enter into detailed discussion about the blog. Use webeditor@rnib.org.uk to report any serious accessibility/usability showstoppers to me.)
Verity
Thanks for taking the time and effort to advise and update our community about the new RNIB blogging system.
I'm sure that more than just a few of us will be paying you a visit very soon.
Cheers!

Is there an RSS for the WAC blog? I can only find the site-wide RSS page (http://www.rnib.org.uk/getinvolved/onlinecommunity/Pages/rss.aspx).
If there's not one specifically for the WAC, are there plans to get one up and running?
Thanks in advance.
