I know it's a very old thread, but I'm resurrecting it to say: my recommendation to authors of dynamic content who might be providing that content to HTML5 sites in the near-term future is to avoid the acronym tag.
I say this because we have a number of sites being driven by HTML content from a database, in which acronyms are conscientiously indicated by markup. The annoyance of working around this at a later date is simply not worth it for the sake of a slightly more appropriate tag.
Save yourself the pain!
