Using the web blind and without using hands to type.

Reply with quote Hi,

I'm trying to get some help or advice for my partner. He is 30 years old and a software developer, he has an eye problem that causes him a constant headache. It's been 4 years and nobody can diagnose what it is, he has seen doctors in Madrid and London, had MRI's and numerous tests, the headache is 24 hours a day 7 days a week, there has been no point at all in the last 4 years when he hasn't had a headache. The headache has got a lot worse lately and he has been wearing a blindfold all day because his eyes have gone very light sensitive. It means he cannot look at near sighted things, this means he cannot read a book or newspaper, cannot look at a computer screen.

He also has RSI in both hands.

He has been experimenting with screen readers but because of the RSI also needs to use speech recognition. He is using Windows 7 voice recognition, but is having problems making it work with JAWS.

If anyone has any advice please contact us, any information will be gratefully received because at the moment he cannot see how he will be able to carry on in his career. He listens to a lot of podcasts so if anyone knows of any that may be usefull please do send me the links.

Thanks
Reply with quote For accessibility podcasts I really like http://www.abilitynet.org.uk/podcast (great reviews of software, demos and such).

I think if you get in touch with the national association for the blind and partially sighted in your country, they should be able to give advice and maybe offer training in how to use certain products (at least they do where I am from).

Now I'm just guessing here, but perhaps windows 7 isn't the best operating system. Unless he does only microsoft software development of course.
Reply with quote Hi Linda,

Thank you for the link. I downloaded the podcasts and J really enjoyed them. We've found that Blind Cool Tech is also good for podcasts. http://www.blindcooltech.com/

Thanks again Smile
