scanner for reading sqare code graphic in ads
I am seeing each day more & more one inch square code graphics in magazine & newspaper ads that the reader is encouraged to point a smart phone camera at in order to access the advertisers site on the internet.
I do not own a smart phone and at this time do not have any need or desire for one.
However, is there any inexpensive device (hand held scanner or otherwise) that I can purchase that would enable me to have the same results with the graphics as would a smart phone?
best, Aaron

These are called QR codes. The work the same way like barcodes, just using a different shape. They usually provide a URL so your web browser displays the information. In which case you can just type the URL.
A plain old 'feature phone' like my Sharp GX15 would probably capture and process QR codes and be very cheap. With some Java-based software (now called an 'app') installed and a web pack to use the GPRS connection (not 3G). If you can find somewhere which still sells GPRS, that is.
Often there is a QR code but no text. This is stupid because you have to spent time on a photographic-driven workflow instead of simply typing in a URL.
It's really a failed technology, afaict. You'll find plenty of jokes to that effect on the web.
