iSamurai - our game for iPhone/ iPod Touch uses sounds
Hi,
Our game, iSamurai Bluetooth: Real Life Sword Fight for the iPhone and iPod Touch, has a single-player mode that works completely by sound.
How it works
There are 4 different characters to battle with your iPhone (or iPod Touch). Each character has 3 levels of difficulty. The character calls out one of four attacks: high strike, right strike, left strike, low strike, and the player respond with the correct block by moving the iPhone. The player can also attack by swinging the iPhone in one of the four attacks. The winner is announced after the battle is over.
There is also a two-player game, but with feedback on whether an attack is blocked or not.
Here is an email that I received from a user:
"What a great game. Never seen anything like it on any platform. I'm telling everyone. Can't wait for my first in person duel.
"Bound to be the biggest game for blind people in history I'd imagine." J.D.
The game is currently selling for 99 cents. More information is available at http://isamuraiapp.com and at http://toykite.com

This sounds interesting Doug, have you had any more feedback from blind users? Was it designed with blind people in mind? I assume not as you say the sound-only option is a particular mode. I'd be interested to hear more about the potential market for these kind of apps - I definitely think the best approach seems to be offering games which everyone can play (i.e. not just targeted for the blind but offering them a mode which competes with any visual mode).

Doug, can I just say that I find this very interesting, because it intersects with two of my professional interests—accessibility and mobile technology! I'll definitely be taking a closer look when I can shave some time out of my rather heavy project schedule.
Hi,
Sorry to take so long to reply.
- No, we have not had feedback from blind users. I would love to hear from any blind users who have tried iSamurai.
- The game was not originally designed with blind people in mind. Rather we created a two-player game which relies on sight, and later we added a single-player mode to the game and that mode had to be sound based.
We have now released a new free version of single-player game which adds a new power-up feature called "Critical Strike". This version is completely sound-based and includes a sound-based introduction. Note however that there are written instructions inside the game.

Recently a blind player beat the hardest level on our game, iSamurai. He is the 2nd player to notify us about beating this level.
