Reply with quote Hi guys,

Time for Malarkey to ask a question...

In a recent blog posting, http://www.stuffandnonsense.co.uk/... , I have looked at ways of providing alternative content to complex images without the issues surrounding Longdesc or D-Link.

Promted by Richard Rutter I would like to ask specifically which browsers support Longdesc and which don't. Any answers would be welcome... Wink

Reply with quote There's not much point for regular browsers to support longdesc, I suppose, with the exception of text browsers. It's more important for screen readers. I know that pwWebSpeak supports it.

Reply with quote if by "support" you mean "make easily accessible to the user", then i think the answer would be none of the mainstream ones. i've been playing with the idea of writing a Firefox extension to add "view long description" to the image context menu for quite a while...just need to find the time to sit down and play around with XUL and stuff a bit more...

i said that? hmm...well, you know, not making any promises that my measly attempts at writing an extension will actually come to fruition, but...we'll see Wink

Reply with quote right kids... redux' firefox longdesc extension
take it for a spin, let me know if there's any bugs. tested in firefox 1.0PR and mozilla 1.7.3.
(and yes, it obviously only shows the context menu item when the image element you're over actually does have a longdesc attribute)

Reply with quote Hey have you guys considered a simpler solution - surround the image in a link to its transcript ..?
Reply with quote redux' firefox longdesc extension updated to 0.2 - dramatically simplified the javascript code, putting the browser's built-in functions to good use. as a byproduct, it now handles longdesc also when viewing local files (with a file:// url)

Reply with quote Dear Malarkey,
Your site not passing Watchfire Level 3?. Talking so much nonsense about accessbility.
First Check your sites and fix it. It will helps other users can learn from your site.

Please Clearify.

So what's the point?

It doesn't work with Firefox 1.0.7, which is what I use. You get an exclamation error message when trying to install. Says it only works with Firefox 1.4 to 1.5, which is a pain. Sad

Maybe you could suggest that Chris Pederick add some Longdesc related options to the "Images" menu of the Web Developer Extension? Would be nice to diagnose sites which had this attribute automatically.

just install version 0.2.1 rather than 0.3. i made a fresh start with 0.3, so broke backwards compatibility on purpose.

that would be good for diagnosis, indeed. so mine will be for users, and his bit for developers. like it.

dear siva...even though you're obviously a troll, let's just clarify that watchfire (formerly the infamous bobby) is NOT a measure of accessibility. after manually reviewing the points where webXact thinks Malarky's site fails, the priority 2 ones are debatable while the priority 3 one is not applicable anymore (as browsers nowadays do differentiate links separated just by whitespace quite well, thank you very much).

"talking so much nonsense"...well, look who's talking here...why don't you show us some of your work, so we can be enlightened as well? muppet...
