Target to be subject of legal action in the US
As Derek Featherstone has blogged, US retail giant Target are to be the, ahem, target of a legal action by the National Federation of the Blind. Looks like it's gonna shape up to be an interesting one...

Hmm, interesting stuff. Will a US case have any relevance to the UK and elsewhere, though?

technically it should have no effect
But
It might get the multinationals thinking again about there web presence
and where the big money goes the smaller people follow
that would be the best to hope for
I spoke to a barrister friend of mine today about this - saying that I didn't think a UK precedent had been established in the High Court. He thought that the outcome of the US case would have persuasive authority - in other words, a UK court could take note of the rationale behind the US judgement.
and you might be interested in what our enlightened friends on the sitepoint forums have to say on the issue....

Gotta love a country where you can sue McDonald's because they didn't warn you that their hot fresh coffee was hot & you burn yourself while doing 90 down the Highway but a blind guy wanting to use a shop is villified. Disgusting.

and it shows how many people think the web is a visual media and not an information store ( the original intent of the web )
and its sadder that these people are the "web developers"
Perhaps a timely reminder of the quality of posts on this forum (mine aside..) - we can all get a bit cozy with each other here and forget where the bulk of the community is on issues like this. It's also evident that people in the US are fed up to the back teeth of lawsuits to the point that apparently some top politicians are inviting lawyers to bird shoots and then shooting them.

The comments on the digg thread Target sued because website doesn't allow the blind to see are equally as ignorant and disgusting as the sitepoint ones.

And a lovely calm, steady, well argued and reasoned response you've left on Digg there, Patrick.
Heh heh.

Wow, a website that makes slashdot look like the epitome of droll, sophisticated verbal intercourse
I quite like the implication that accessibility is some sort of goldmine, as if accessible developers are raking in cash from poor, exploited retailers.
sadly, not everyone believes disabled people* are deserving of the same rights as everyone else. IMHO this is basically what it all boils down to.

Obviously left handed, blue-eyed males called Jack are deserving of more rights than anyone else, but that's hardly controversial...

Though left-handedness was consider a disability around 100-year ago.
