Home / Beginners / set up firefox as a text only browser

Reply with quote Hi All

I'd like to set Firefox up with a (close to lynx) text only profile. To do this I should disable:

ALL CSS Styles
All Javascript
All Flash
All Images
All Java

Anything else I should do?

Also my Firefox seems to forget that I have disabled CSS Styles each tme I move to a new page - if this is not unusual is there a way to disable css once.

Thanks Pete
Reply with quote try this

Install Chris Pedericks web developer toolbar
http://chrispederick.com/

Restart FF

Select > Options > Persist Features

Select > CSS > Disable styles

Select > Images > Disable Images

Select > Disable > Disable Javascript

enjoy your (almost) text browser

Reply with quote Have you tried Opera with the user style sheets? V. easy to do, and one of them even looks like Lynx!

Reply with quote Hello Alastc

Taking your tip I've updated my Opera and found this article:

http://www.opera.com/...

Does it describe the way you use Opera in text mode? not sure where i get the 'lynx lookalike' mode you mentioned.

minor irritation for me - the G key (to toggle images) and Ctrl+G (toggle Auth mode) don't appear to work for me.

otherwise great thanks.
Reply with quote I was just thinking of switching to user mode (make sure you've got the 'view' bar up, perhaps click on the glasses icon), and then select 'emulate text browser'.

Beyond that, I guess it depends what you are trying to achieve with this? Very few people actually use Lynx (probably most are sys-admins going through a command line), so turning off styling in Firefox / Opera is generally just as good.
