Section 508 Compliance
I can't seem to find a definitive answer on this. I work for a non-profit hospital system. How do I know if Section 508 applies to us? (Ignoring the fact that it makes good sense, of course...)
Thanks
Thanks
I'm not intimately familiar with the requirements of Section 508, but as I understand it, any government agency, and companies working for /with government agencies are required / strongly advised to be Section 508 compliant.
I'm neither an American nor a lawyer, but I was under the impression that any organization that receives any form of federal funding is required to be Section 508 compliant.
The organization doesn't have to be directly connected to the government, or even working directly with the government. If it receives government funding in any way, it has to comply.
I may be wrong, though ...

Probably a good time to start with references... (Starting with section508.gov):
508 Law :
Section 508 Standards goes into a bit more detail:
508 Law :
Quote:
The law applies to all Federal agencies when they develop, procure, maintain, or use electronic and information technology.
Section 508 Standards goes into a bit more detail:
Quote:
Section 508 requires that when Federal agencies develop, procure, maintain, or use electronic and information technology, Federal employees with disabilities have access to and use of information and data that is comparable to the access and use by Federal employees who are not individuals with disabilities, unless an undue burden would be imposed on the agency. Section 508 also requires that individuals with disabilities, who are members of the public seeking information or services from a Federal agency, have access to and use of information and data that is comparable to that provided to the public who are not individuals with disabilities, unless an undue burden would be imposed on the agency.
Ths is my uderstandin of sektion 508 takin from the 508 website:
In 1998, Congress amended the Rehabilitation Act to require Federal agencies to make their electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities. Inaccessible technology interferes with an individual's ability to obtain and use information quickly and easily.
Section 508 was enacted to eliminate barriers in information technology, to make available new opportunities for people with disabilities, and to encourage development of technologies that will help achieve these goals.
The law applies to all Federal agencies when they develop, procure, maintain, or use electronic and information technology. Under Section 508 (29 U.S.C. ‘ 794d), agencies must give disabled employees and members of the public access to information that is comparable to the access available to others.
Section 508 applies to the Federal government but there may be implications for employees and others at the State level.
